SPACE CENTER Houston AP Columbia commander John Young reported a computer problem aboard the shuttle. Mission Control delayed this morning's intended Edwards Air Force Base landing to allow ground teams to assess the issue. The crew remains safe as the ship uses backup systems for re entry after a 10 day Spacelab mission.

Soviets suspend arms talks in Geneva due to U S missile deployment

In Geneva the Soviet Union suspended talks on reducing long range missiles and bombers citing a changed strategic situation from the start of new American missiles in Europe. Tass said the restart date is not set and follows a prior pause on medium range missiles.

Aiken Jaycees and Salvation Army Aid Holiday Drives

Charity drives under way in Aiken County involve the Aiken Jaycees Valley Empty Stocking Fund and The Salvation Army. The Jaycees sponsor a December 17 Christmas Shopping Tour at Wal-Mart for needy children, followed by a party at the Jaycee hut with Santa. The Valley fund raised 12000 last year. donations are mailed to multiple local post office boxes. The Salvation Army aims for 33000 this year with a mail appeal and kettle campaign to fund food checks toys gifts and year round programs.
