North Trial A Travesty
America remembers its heroes well, just not very long. For the continuing political persecution of Col. Ollie North, we should all be ashamed. The media and hostile Congress tried to undermine Reagan by using North. It didn’t work. Reagan remains popular and the administration won a vote of confidence. Yet the government spends about 10.8 million to try to jail North. North and Poindexter were indicted for conspiracy last March and have no trial dates. Taxpayers subsidize the other side as they pay legal costs. Why has Reagan not pardoned North and Poindexter to avoid Iran Contra vendetta? Mrs. Reagan fears advisers wronged the President, but others urge a pardon. Falwell collected petitions. Hyde and other Republicans plead without success. This is not like Reagan to abandon a patriot. The separation of powers issue looms as Congress usurps executive functions, complicating the next presidency.
