South Carolina lawmakers on the House Ways and Means Committee postponed a vote on raising the gasoline tax from 13 to 15 cents per gallon. They want a management report from the Department of Highways and Public Transportation, due January 21, before action. The increase would add about 36 million dollars for highway construction and maintenance. Chief Walker Ragin said a better highway system is needed to boost state competitiveness and attract industry.
