Winthrop Medallion Honors Gov West at 10th Coeducation Anniversary
Westhrop College marked its 10th anniversary as coeducational by honoring former South Carolina Gov John West who led the 1956 push for coeducation and who signed the 10 year ago bill admitting men full time to Winthrop. Winthrop President Phil Lader praised West for guiding the controversial fight through enrollment decline and other problems. West recalled the long struggle and noted Marion Gressette, the late senator from Calhoun, eventually recognizing the change.
