Missing M-16 rifles prompt SRP security probe

Savannah River Plant security chief Clif Webb says three M-16 rifles are missing from the weapons inventory. Wackenhut Services Inc reported the loss on August 17 and the DOE task force probes access controls, with FBI and Wackenhut assisting the investigation. Each rifle is valued at 450 dollars.

Patrol Out In Force For Labor Day Weekend

The S C Highway Patrol will be on duty from 6 p m Friday to midnight Monday during Labor Day weekend. Troopers will monitor beaches and other busy areas for speeders and drunk or drug impaired drivers. Last Labor Day weekend 11 people died in auto accidents in the state.

Flashing Beacon Planned At Pine Log Intersection

The South Carolina Highway Department plans flashing beacons at the Pine Log Road and Richardson's Lake Road intersection to improve traffic control. Beacons will show red for stop and yellow for through traffic to warn motorists approaching from Richardson's Lake Road and through Pine Log Road. The chief commissioner cites the junction as extremely dangerous after a two car crash on August 1 killed a 40 year old Langley man.

SRL Chief Retires To Join DOE Post

J. Roger Hilley, longtime Savannah River Laboratory manager since 1982, leaves Du Pont to become associate director for storage and transportation systems in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. He will join former SRL colleagues in government service.

Du Pont Donates 3500 for Savannah River Plant Exhibit

Du Pont contributes 3500 to Aiken County Historical Museum for a SRP creation exhibit funded by the corporate public affairs committee. DOE support includes archival materials and up to 10000 from USC Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for related Indian and colonial history artifacts. The exhibit opens Sept 22 in Banksia building.
