Vatican City AP reports Pope John Paul II declaring the devil a real foe still tempting humanity. He framed Satan as the unclean spirit and anti Christ, warning against falling from God’s law. Italian media hyped the sermons with sensational illustrations.
Princess Caroline banged her car into a rock outcropping about 200 yards from the site of Princess Grace’s 1982 fatal accident. She was shaken but recovered quickly, driven alone to her country home after hitting a parapet blinded by oncoming lights near Monte Carlo.

The DOE inspector general will review how an unusual tritium spike reached Savannah River water in March and why Du Pont records under-reported the levels. A March 28 29 release from the D Area facility caused the spike to 100000 pico curies per liter downstream, though no health risk was posed.
Augusta prosecutors rest after presenting 74 items of evidence in the Williams case. Alexander Edmund Williams, 18, faced charges including murder and robbery for the March death of 16 year old Aleta Bunch of Beech Island. Williams did not testify as his attorney sought directed verdicts.
The Commerce Department reports the Index of Leading Indicators up 1.1 percent in July, the strongest gain since April, yet June was revised from 0.3% up to 0.4% down. The latest data show mixed signals with positives like money supply and new business formation, but negatives such as stock prices and building permits.
The July gain lifts the index to 179.4 versus 100 in 1967. Data Resources Inc predicts 2.5 percent growth in the second half of 1986, while Evans Economics projects 2.5 to 3 percent in the July to September quarter.
Detroit AP: General Motors plans 2.9 percent on 36 month loans to move a large 1986 model stock. Dealers say the plan was to be announced at a Detroit news conference but leaked early. Other terms include 4.8 percent for 48 months and 9.9 percent for 60 months amid high inventories.
