State health officials say heavy rains are hatching an army of mosquitoes across South Carolina. County health departments monitor populations and work to curb pests. Pat Wright of DHEC Vector Control Division notes mosquitoes depend on water to complete development.
A Florida appellate court ruled police informants cannot use sex to induce crime. Judge Joe Cowart Jr noted sex is an too strong inducement. The decision upheld dismissal of a Citrus County case where a man alleged entrapment by a female informant offering sexual favors for cocaine.
The Labor Day outlook shows chilly dismal conditions with an 80 percent chance of rain tonight and cooler temperatures in the 60s. Tomorrow remains rainy with a 70 percent chance and highs in the low 70s. Details on Page 4A.

WickesCos announced the end of its hostile takeover for Owens Corning Fiberglas Corp after selling part of its stake for about 9.4 million. The firm did not confirm exercising an option on another large block worth 134.3 million. Owens Corning praised the recapitalization plan to boost shareholder value.
Libyan official Maj. Abdel Salem Jalloud demanded hard U.S. proof of Libyan sponsorship of extremist violence and warned Europe against involvement in American aggression. He pledged to prosecute terrorists and said Libya would cooperate to arrest suspects, with trials at home or an international court.
Alexander Williams was sentenced to die in the Georgia electric chair for the kidnapping rape and murder of 16 year old Aleta Carol Bunch of Beech Island. Jurors found aggravating circumstances including rape armed robbery and kidnapping with bodily injury and noted religious considerations as mitigating.
