In Oakland California police found Hi Newton, a former Black Panther, fatally shot in the street early today. Newton lay in west Oakland with multiple gunshot wounds including a head shot. Police treat the slaying as a homicide.
Charleston officials dispute a South Carolina State game plan to ban the Dixie song and Confederate flag in a Sept. 0 matchup with The Citadel. Councilman Robert Ford says the symbols recall slavery and oppression. others defend tradition. Separately, SeaWorld reports killer whale Kandu died after colliding with Corky during a 4 p.m. show at Shamu Stadium, prompting show cancellation and a mass evacuation.

Leigh Anne Sailors recalls a family tragedy from November 9, 1977, when her grandparents G.C. and Gwendolyn Sailors were shot in their North Augusta home. Relatives and investigators remain baffled, asking why anyone would murder them as the case remains unsolved.
More than 22,000 students crowded Aiken County schools on the first day, adding about 163 students to last year’s tally. Area 1 in Aiken led growth with 246 more students, while Area 4 Wagener-Valley posted a drop of 217 and Area 3 Valley schools saw a 32 student decrease. Superintendent Dr. Joseph R. Brooks noted the district still projects higher figures and may hire more staff if attendance exceeds estimates.
National police said proceedings began to hand over Eduardo Martinez Romero, a 35 year old economist, to the United States under a new emergency extradition plan for top narcotics traffickers. Martinez was arrested in Sucre during a weekend raid on a rural estate near Tolu.

Police report 788 killed and 2,187 wounded since March 8 amid fighting between Aoun's forces and Syrian troops and allied groups. The Syrian backed leftist block claimed to have fired on six ships in Lebanese waters to block docking at Christian ports. The command said its gunners scored direct hits on the lead ship, forcing the flotilla to sail away.
Energy Secretary James D. Watkins proposes negotiations with 11 governors to monitor federal nuclear facilities. States California Union Florida Idaho Missouri Nevada New Mexico South Carolina Tennessee Texas Washington would independently validate DOE data and help set cleanup priorities. Deputy Secretary Henson Moore calls the plan unprecedented in scope and access to facilities.
Pasadena Calif. Voyager 2 finds a churn ing turbulent Neptune atmosphere with huge white clouds of frozen natural gas and a fast rotating scooter around the planet. Triton appears brighter cooler and smaller than expected and may have snow and frozen water. Dark spots near Triton's equator and a pink cast from discolored frozen gas or methane are noted.
