Man killed by lightning at funeral service in Columbia
Charles Rice, 50, attending his aunt’s funeral at Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Columbia, was struck by lightning about 1:45 p.m. A tent shelter collapsed with his clothes burned. he was the nephew of Mary E. Pickens. Coroner and funeral director provided details.

Couple survives 66 days at sea after whale attack sank boat
William Butler and his wife Simone, both rescued off Costa Rica after 66 days adrift in a rubber lifeboat. They survived on raw fish and purified water, fending off shark attacks after their 40 foot boat Sione sank June 15 1200 miles southwest of Costa Rica. The pair drifted eastward, catching 400 to 500 pounds of fish and maintaining radio contact with daughter Susan Smith in Miami before rescue.

May 25 1984 a light green sedan struck bicyclist Robert J Tatti 59 a Savannah River Plant worker on S C 19 between Aiken and New Ellenton. Coroner Sue Townsend pursues identification of the elusive driver seeking evidence for a possible conviction. FBI forensics identified vehicle type and paint flecks from the bike imply a hit and run. Colombia Troops Arrest 10,000 In Broad Sweep On Drug Lords
Colombia forces detained 9,896 people in 298 raids nationwide after the assassination of Sen. Luis Carlos Galan. First School Day Opens Smoothly Under Fog Shroud
