California voids 1995 San Francisco same sex marriages
California Supreme Court voided 3,995 same sex marriages performed in San Francisco between February 12 and March 11. Justices ruled the mayor overstepped authority issuing licenses, violating a 1977 state law defining marriage as between a man and a woman. The ruling preserves state law limits while leaving broader rights litigation to future courts.
