Barlow gets 15 years for fatal DUI in Aiken County

Jack Paul Barlow, turning 51 this month, pleaded guilty to felony DUI in a packed Aiken County courtroom. He drove head on into Ron Heat on July 21, killing him. Judge Marion Kinon imposed the maximum 15 years and a 25000 dollar fine to deter drunk driving.

Lifeboat Saga: 152 Rescued Off Newfoundland

A Canadian patrol vessel rescued 152 men women and children adrift in lifeboats near St John s Newfoundland after being abandoned by an unidentified ship. Survivors from Sri Lanka said they fled 35 days earlier seeking refuge and headed for Canada. The vessel of origin and route remain unknown.

New Rocket Design May Solve Problems

Johnson Space Center reports engineers redesigned a solid rocket engine to prevent O ring failures that caused the Challenger disaster. Tests aim to confirm a third O ring, a metal lip for a sealed joint, interlocking insulation, and a bolt attachment to the nozzle joint. If successful, Morton Thiokol could deliver engines by December 1987 with flights possibly by spring 1988.
