USC President James B. Holderman joked with Clemson graduates dressed in black robes and joked about orange attire. He urged collaboration among South Carolina universities to meet the state's industry R D needs and support the people of South Carolina.
AP reports Allen Lang, a veteran living in El Paso, was awakened at 3 a.m. when SWAT officers used a stun grenade during a search for a gunman. Lang, bruised from being dragged outside, said he understood the officers were doing their duty and they later apologized.
A 50 percent chance of thundershowers is forecast for today and tomorrow. Temperatures will trend cooler with a high near 90 tomorrow and tonight’s low in the low 70s with a 40 percent chance of thunder rain. Details are on Page 10A.

West Berlin police report a 30-year-old man set a fire atop the Berlin Wall near the Brandenburg Gate before British MPs carried him away. The event followed mass anti-wall rallies as Berlin marked the wall’s 25th anniversary. Reagan was quoted calling for the wall to come down and denouncing totalitarian regimes.
The United States faces a rising burden of long term care as 6.5 million seniors need it now, with projections to nearly 19 million by 2040. Medicaid dominates funding but requires impoverishment before benefits, prompting calls for major policy reform by experts from AHCA and Johns Hopkins.
Anchorage Alaska AP says Coast Guard cutter Midgett and U S fishing vessel captains map retrieval of 150 crab pots in disputed waters near St Matthew Island about 120 miles west and 40 miles from pots. The plan includes aerial reconnaissance from HC 130 and radio instructions to State Department if Soviet force appears.
Los Angeles AP report notes OPEC's tighter oil supplies may lift pump prices in coming days though a Lundberg Survey analyst expects only a short-lived rise. Prices have slid recently by about 1.67 cents a gallon, with the analyst predicting brief increases at independents and dealers before another drop.
