Woman Settles Suit Out Of Court in Charleston Case

An undisclosed out-of-court settlement was reached with a woman who sued Charleston County Sheriff Charles F. Dawley for 1 million dollars after her husband died in the county jail. Dawley said he was unaware of the agreement and had expected trial before it was postponed. The suit cited jail crowding as a factor in Arnold Sidney Singleton's death on January 25, 1984 following a beating by inmate Antonio Randall Wright during a dispute over cigarettes. Singleton, 32, died three hours after the altercation at a naval medical center.
