Foreigners Own Less Than Five Percent Of Aiken County Farmland

Aiken County records show 14 635 acres of farmland owned by foreign nationals under the Foreign Investors Disclosure Act. The Catawba Newsprint Company and two English firm subsidiaries hold most of the land with three Canadian individuals owning the rest. Dawsey says compliance was good, estimates were high, and violations will be reported to Washington for penalties up to 25 percent of land value.

Owens-Corning Fiberglas to Hire 30-40 More at Aiken Plant

Owens Corning Fiberglas will open a 13 million shingle mats facility at its Aiken plant this fall adding 30 to 40 jobs to the current 2,000. The plant, a textile operation, spins fiber for backings and uses in tape, paper, carpet and window screens while phasing out boat and car fiber production. The new mat shingle will be stronger and pricier and will be produced for both Owens Corning and other manufacturers with limited production starting in late September or October.

Carter Plans Two Year Wage and Price Guidelines

Protesters Resume Vigil at Savannah River Plant Anniversary

About a dozen protesters mark the 34th Hiroshima Nagasaki anniversaries with a four day vigil at the Savannah River Plant Jackson gate near Aiken. They pray and hand out leaflets while 800 workers pass by. They plan 7 am to 7 pm access until Thursday with a warning of arrest after dark.
