Weather slows effort to raise Monitor turret off Hatteras
Navy divers race against weather as they prepare to lift the USS Monitor’s 120-ton turret from the ocean floor 16 miles off Cape Hatteras. A heavy crane barge must rotate to face the wind, reposition anchors, and attach a steel claw to the turret before hoisting it to a platform for surface recovery amid 15 to 20 mph winds and forecasts of a storm. The mission, part of a $6.5 million five-year project with NOAA and the Mariners’ Museum, also uncovered a likely sailor’s remains to be analyzed and honored.
