Balli family wins verdict in Padre Island oil fraud case
A Brownsville jury ruled that the New York attorney who acquired Padre Island in 1938 swindled the Balli descendants out of about 1.1 million dollars in oil and gas royalties. They seek 11 million in total damages with punitive damages to be decided next. The case highlights decades of dispossession and ongoing battles over land and oil rights on Padre Island.
