An Aiken woman narrowly dodged a $5,000 scam after a caller claimed she won $1.5 million in the Florida lottery. The bogus messenger, Joe Lavarone from Oakland Park, Fla., urged wiring funds to claim the prize. Western Union later alerted the victim, who recovered the amount. Police will pursue further contact with a Western Union representative. Authorities warn to distrust offers that require upfront payment and to contact local law enforcement with concerns.
