First Lt. Ernest S. Clark of Mount Airy North Carolina was plucked from North Vietnam by a Super Jolly Green Giant helicopter after eight days on the run. A second crewman on his RF4 was not recovered following the April 20 shootdown near Dong Hoi sixty miles north of the DMZ.
In Washington J Edgar Hoover asserted the FBI bans hippies and activists including gay individuals. He denied tapping any member of Congress despite claims. Hoover told Congress youths should be tried as adults and urged lowering juvenile age to 15.
Rep Mendel J. Davis of South Carolina was selected to join the House Internal Security Committee. The move aims to shore up Democratic control as they contend with dissident and defector pressures on the panel. Davis called the assignment interesting and said it helps protect the American way of life.
The Downtown Revitalization Committee urged the Aiken City Council to remove all parking meters and hire a parking control officer to enforce a two hour limit on Laurens Street Richland Avenue Park Avenue Haynes Avenue Barnwell Avenue Pendleton Street and Newberry Street. The meter maid would mark tires and enforce the limit to boost downtown shopping.
The U S Weather Bureau predicts a pleasant weekend with a 20 percent rain chance tomorrow. Tonight will be partly cloudy and mild with lows in the 50s. Saturday expects mid 70s to near 80 with southwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
North Vietnamese divisions with tanks broke through the northern Saigon defense, pushing government troops toward Quang Tri. Dong Ha fell as the offensive reached eight miles from Quang Tri, with two bases southwest of the city abandoned under heavy shelling totaling 10,000 rounds in two days.
An Aiken woman identified as Edna Abney is in jail on assault and battery with intent to kill after reporting her husband John Henry Abney was shot in the stomach by a .22 caliber pistol. The case is under investigation alongside theft reports at the Aiken Ramada Inn construction site and an assault on Marion Courtney on Williamsburg Street. Meanwhile U S forces bombed North Vietnamese positions around Quang Tri as tanks fell back and the city Hue faced shelling in a broader campaign.
The fifth annual Aiken Spring Arts Festival concludes this weekend with a Band Festival at Aiken High School featuring junior high and high school groups under James Kitchings and William Slaughter. Over 300 students perform rock to unfinished symphony pieces. Two one act plays at the Aiken Community Playhouse and a Sunday choral concert at First Baptist Church conclude the weekend.
A light afternoon program featuring A Spoonful of Sugar and Oliver with Cockney accents, plus Beethoven Mozart and Simon and Garfunkel. The Ceramic Show runs Sunday 3 to 5 pm at Ceramic House, Virginia Acres Park, displaying student year’s work. More than nine students attend weekly ceramics classes under Mrs H L Christenson at the Aiken Recreation Department.
Ambulance officials sign a Para Med contract after delays over minor changes. Granville DeWitt explains the 90 day rate cut from 35 to 30 dollars within the North Augusta Augusta corporate area. The deal covers funeral directors and northern county areas, with July 1, 1972 as the start.
