The government lifted wage and price controls from millions of small businesses and small government units with 60 or fewer employees. Director Donald Rumsfeld said the move streamlines the program and is not a step toward ending controls. Health and construction, and rent controls remain unchanged.
Danny Ward Robertson, 24, of Seattle, pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in the Belvedere motorcycle clubhouse killings. A 12‑member jury will decide life imprisonment or death by the electric chair. Robertson, once called Rabbit, showed no emotion as he stood before the bench.
Saigon reports South Vietnam lost its first provincial capital as Hanoi's forces captured Quang Tri after five days of heavy fighting. The stretch from the DMZ to the south fell under North Vietnamese control, with rice crops and population control seized along the central coast and Highway 1 severed north of Da Nang. Kontum faced renewed pressure as central highlands tensions rose.
North Vietnam radio in Hong Kong declared the demilitarized zone is not an international border and that moving tanks artillery and troops across it does not constitute an invasion. It asserted Vietnam is a single unified territory with no international boundary and urged defense against the alleged aggressor.

The Aiken County Board of Road Commissioners resolved to sell 5.3 acres in the Chinqua pin ravine for 500 to nearby owner Hattie Kneece. The land, once a fish pond, was bought in 1935 1936 for 40 and 15. The PCA asked for a list of proposed facilities by 1977, but the county cannot operate sewage systems for only part of the county. Aikenite Cohen pled not guilty to resist arrest and disobeying a lawful order. A closed session addressed 10 juveniles arrested after a disturbance on Rollingwood Road and Highland Park Drive. A jury trial was tentatively set for July or October.
Ambulance plan for Aiken County moves ahead with Para Med contract for three ambulances starting July 1. Resident manager to arrive May 15 and recruitment of Vietnam era paramedics to begin June 1. DeWitt stressed the system will enhance in home emergency care and continuous monitoring, not a taxi service.
The U S Weather Bureau projects highs in the lower 80s today and tomorrow with scattered showers possible. Lows will be in the mid 50s and rain chances stay near 10 to 20 percent. The extended outlook calls for scattered showers Wednesday and 70s days with 50s nights Thursday and Friday.
Aiken County School District Superintendent Dr. T. Myers says Nixon's moratorium proposal won’t impact the district. About 20 black students at Burnettown Elementary are involved in a federal order, while most of the district follows a local voluntary integration plan. Burnettown was previously all white, with buses already running for students.
