Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins will address USC Aiken’s spring sports banquet on May 1 at 7 30 p m in the school gym. Cremins led Georgia Tech to the ACC tournament title and a NCAA East Regional final appearance and was named national coach of the year. Tickets cost 10 adults 8 students with advance purchase.
Midland Valley Mustangs won 8-7 over Orangeburg-Wilkinson as John Hearn led with three hits and Joey Batchelor and Curtis Thompson added two each. Batchelor got the win, Thompson saved in relief with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The Mustangs sit 12-7 overall and 5-5 in Region 3-AAAA and host Airport tomorrow at 7 at Clearwater Field. The Silver Bluff Lady Bulldogs defeated South Aiken 11-4 in softball as Louise Greenwood went 4-for-4 and earned the mound win. The Bulldogs are 9-2 overall, 7-1 in Conference 5-AA. Also scheduled is the Aiken Swim Association general meeting on Wednesday April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Owens-Corning-Fiberglass Clubhouse following dinner.
Bernhard Langer, winner of consecutive American Tour events, will add the Houston Open to his schedule after a Sea Pines Heritage Classic playoff win over Bobby Wadkins. Langer tied at 273 after 72 holes and finished two under par, capturing $72,000 and moving to third on the money list. Wadkins, who did not bogey the final 18, settles for runner up amid a strong showing. Hal Sutton and Tim Norris tied for third at 274.
USCA Pacers win two district games boosting playoff hopes. Friday at Satcher Field USCA beat Francis Marion 6 2 with strong hitting from Slocum Butler and Busch while Charlie Loos struck out 15 for his sixth win. Saturday USCA set a school mark with a 10 7 road win over Wofford as Parker Durham and Malizia led the offense and Mertens closed with three scoreless innings.
In a see saw opener the Rockets fell 14 at Utah then bounced back as Lloyd 27 and Lucas 18 led Houston’s 122 96 victory to level the best of five. Isiah Thomas 29 powered Detroit past New Jersey 121 111 as Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Detroit grabbed early series leads.
