Steve Griffin of Southern Bell in Aiken announced the new electric switching system will begin serving customers Saturday. The ESS combines telephone and computer technology and can perform over a million functions per dialed call. Customers must dial seven digit numbers and will hear new tones as the system connects calls faster with less maintenance.

Labor will grow from six workers during planting to about sixty during harvesting.
