Gov. Dick Riley will address USCA at the annual honors and awards ceremony tonight at 7:30 in the Student Activities building. Outstanding students and the teacher of the year will be honored.
The Aiken County Board of Education will hold a regular session at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Educational Center on Edgefield Ave. The agenda includes hiring teachers for summer committee work, allocating Federal funds for 1985, revising the district superintendent evaluation policy, and reviewing personnel appointments and the March 1985 financial report.
Aiken City Council plans a 7:30 p.m. meeting at 214 Park Ave to consider amending the zoning ordinance. Dave Horne of Badcock Home Furnishings seeks to permit a furniture store near Pine Log Center on Pine Log Road previously forbidden in neighborhood business zones.
Retailers urge shoppers to hit stores as warm weather nears. Forecast calls for mild night lows in the 50s and a sunny, warm day with highs in the 80s.
On Saturday Southern Bell converted to a new system that mandates dialing the full seven digits for local calls. The change affects residents trying to reach nearby friends and businesses and ends the old five digit dialing practice.
The Rev. Adam Kuczma, once a Polish youth in a Russian labor camp, spoke at North Aikien Baptist Church about his life. He described a childhood of strict religious discipline and Poland's 1939 dissolution, with invasions from both Germany and Russia, and his years in captivity before emigrating.

Washington AP report says asbestos removal in U.S. schools will slow this summer because contractors cannot secure liability insurance. Industry sources note no market for asbestos coverage, with bids delayed and work shutting down. EPA plans 45 million in grants starting June, but coverage rules may limit contractor eligibility.
Residents of the Clearwater-Belvedere area will voice their opinions on sanitary sewer options for Aiken County at a 7 p.m. meeting of the County Council. The session, in Clearwater Elementary School cafeteria on S.C. 421, will discuss Willow Springs trunk line alternatives.
Penny Carter of North Augusta will represent the area in August at the South Carolina Junior Miss Pageant in Aiken. She won the pageant's talent and appearance awards and received a scholarship around 500 dollars plus a medallion and flowers. Beverlee Powell was first runner up with talent and photogenic honors, Lea McKie second runner up with scholastic honors.
