DOE OKs Delay Of Taiwan Nuclear Wastes Shipments

The U S Department of Energy agreed to delay shipments of Taiwan nuclear wastes until August 1. Officials assured no movement through Puget Sound San Francisco Bay or Los Angeles during the next three months despite local objections and environmental group challenges. Mount St. Helens Steams Again Amid Limited Plume

Mount St. Helens released a small steam plume on its fifth day of activity, rising from the crater rim at about 6 a.m. Sunday. Gorbachev Calls For Abolition Of Warsaw Pact And NATO

Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev proposed the simultaneous disbanding of the Warsaw Pact and NATO or at least their military structures. He spoke to East Berlin factory workers and reiterated willingness to meet President Reagan if the international climate and disarmament steps allow. Rates may bottom out before rising this year

Washington economists say rates have hit a decade low but may edge up later as the Fed’s 6.5 percent discount rate cut signals policy. Analysts note the economy grew 3.2 percent in Q1 after 0.7 percent late last year, suggesting fewer additional rate reductions ahead.
