Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke land on the moon and begin three planned walks in the lunar mountains. Antenna trouble prevents live TV as Duke sets up a portable transmitter. They plan a nuclear science station and a drive across the plain to study craters Spook and Flag for volcanic clues.
The CPI increased two tenths of one percent in March, easing from February and showing slower grocery price gains. Workers’ average earnings posted the largest March gain in seven years according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
U S B52 and fighter bombers hit targets near Thanh Hoa about 80 miles south of Hanoi. An F4 Phantom was shot down 42 miles southeast of Thanh Hoa, with two crewmen bailing out and rescued at sea. The raids mark the deepest North Vietnam incursions since last Sunday's strikes near Hanoi and Haiphong.
Two members of the President's Panel on Nonpublic Education say the White House will support tax credits for parents sending children to private schools. A White House spokesman warns Nixon will study potential constitutional challenges before deciding. The four member panel, formed to aid parochial schools, presented its report to President Nixon.
The New York Times quotes New York officials that the Republican Party will relocate its national convention from San Diego to Miami Beach, Florida, citing logistical and strategic reasons in a shift from California to Florida.
The U S Weather Bureau forecasts good weather for Aiken events with variable cloudiness through Friday and Saturday. Showers are unlikely with a 30 percent chance and weekend highs in the mid 70s to low 80s, nights in the 50s and winds shifting from east to south at 10 to 15 mph.
South Carolina health officials support an Atomic Energy Commission feasibility study on burying 80 million gallons of radioactive waste in underground tunnels beneath the Savannah River Plant in Aiken County. Dr. L E Priester Jr said the state does not object but will evaluate the study upon completion due to concerns about underground water contamination.
Bids for county stockade renovation closed with two offers. R H Quattlebaum Contractors of Aiken bids 873,184 the low bid. Leaphart and Hall Contractors of Batesburg bids 97,400. Award pending architect adjustments to reduce costs. Work includes dayroom toilets showers laundry and storage areas.
Senator Gilberto McMillan from Aiken proposes a constitutional limit of 72 for legislators and cites business practice. The measure aims to let voters decide in November. Also covered are aging lawmakers and a related SRP and AEC briefing on nuclear waste storage beneath the Tuscaloosa Aquifer in Georgia and South Carolina.
Aiken man John Williamson, 22, was arrested for assault with intent to ravish during a Monday morning robbery of a Black woman on McCormick Street. A purse with $60 was snatched and the victim allegedly cut the assailant with glass before he fled.
A North Augusta woman fired three bullets from a 22 caliber pistol into the porch of Sego Collins home at 329 Barton Rd after her daughter allegedly faced bricks. No injuries, investigation ongoing, no charges. Police also report two grand larcenies and a car-keys theft from local residences.
Granville DeWitt chair of the Aiken County Ambulance Commission cites opposition from Sen. Gilbert E. McMillan and others as they scrutinize a Para Med plan for three 24 hour ambulances costing $176 253 the first year. Funeral home proposals seek partial county funding and fee control while the delegation urges no tax increase and earlier contract adjustments. The service aims for a July 1 start with a committee meeting set for Monday at 7 30 p.m. at the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce.
