New Phone Fees Adopted May Cut Rural Rates In South Carolina
The South Carolina Public Service Commission approved a 1.4 percent phone bill charge to fund a $40 million universal service fund aimed at improving rural and underserved access. Residential bills could rise up to $5, with a typical $20 intrastate long distance customer paying about 28 cents more, while other customers may see long distance rates drop as intrastate deals expand. Frank Knapp of the Small Business Chamber calls it a victory for users, especially small businesses, despite criticism from consumer groups.
