Commerce Department reports March retail sales at 116.6 billion, down 0.8 percent from February 117.5 billion. Revisions show January up 0.4 percent and February up 0.1 percent, marking the largest March drop since October 1985.
Selby Kelly widow of Walt Kelly says Pogo could come back 11 years after its end with Pye negotiating to revive the strip. The original features Pogo, Albert Alligator and other characters, syndicated since 1948 in about 450 papers.

Wholesale gasoline prices plunged 21.9 percent in March, driving a 1.1 percent overall wholesale price drop and a 12.4 percent year-to-date decline. Crude oil slid 24.8 percent, energy costs set new records, while food costs rose 0.3 percent led by vegetables and fruits.
In seasonally adjusted terms the Masters Master index shows the monthly percentage change in wholesale prices. Analysts note small but steady shifts driven by energy and consumer goods sectors, reflecting broader inflation trends.
Chancellor Helmut Kohl identified Libya as a suspect in the West Berlin discotheque bombing that killed two and wounded 230. He noted indications of a Libyan background, while withholding names of others involved. A U.S. Army sergeant and a Turkish woman died, and 63 Americans were among the injured.

The Soviet Union announces it is ending its self-imposed moratorium on nuclear tests in response to a U S detonation in Nevada. Tass says Moscow is ready to resume a mutual moratorium if Washington agrees to halt tests, amid ongoing arms talks.
