Aiken and Barnwell counties cooperatively schedule a solid carload of poultry to depart from Aiken with loading at April 15 at 9 am and shipments to Williston on April 16 and 17. Poultry will be weighed at loading points and cash paid at the car door with no poultry type restrictions.
A new Presbyterian church will be dedicated on Sunday April 19 at 11 15 am. The dedicatory sermon will be by Rev R F Kirkpatrick D D chair of Sunday School Work and Young People in the South Carolina Synod. An evening program directed by Prof Bartch of Augusta features organ prelude Mrs Holbrook Wyman and a full choral and solo program led by Mrs Marian Bailey and others. The service will end with benediction and postlude. All are invited.
A Red Cross work room opened on a Lucecs day with every woman at her station. Sheets were quickly made and distributed to cases in need. Volunteers from Montmorenci altered their services and some already received wool to knit at home. The effort sparked strong enthusiasm and calls for more machines.
The County of Aiken has purchased the Farmers Storage and Fertilizer Co. warehouse and office building plus surrounding land near the freight depot. The $10,000 target purchase will cut rents about $2,000 annually and includes a spur railroad track for unloading. The clerk’s office moves in about ten days after interior changes. space will become three offices and the old court house quarters will be given to the Superintendent of Education.
The Southern Railway will plant a 2000 acre tract in Aiken County between Oakwood and Windsor to study best naval stores practices. W Hancock leads with an assistant and two rangers as work starts soon. The railroad will also reforest 42000 acres in Pregnall Jedburg and Ridgeville. Two methods of facing pine trees for oleo rosin collection will be tested, one a modification of the American system, the other the French system.
An amateur production titled Kentucky Belle will be staged on Friday May 1 at the Aiken Theatre to benefit the Civic League. Directed by Mrs Henry Busbee the cast features Miss Mariah Douglas Mrs Dave Gaston Jr Isabel Douglas Mrs Laurie Croft and others with a large supporting company. A separate legal note indicates Henry Minor of Greenwood was discharged on a criminal assault charge but faces an abduction warrant from Greenwood.
General Order No 9, Lee's final directive after surrender, is noted as held by the Beech Island Agricultural Club in Aiken County. The original was given by Adjutant WMT Atkinson and is kept in a bank vault, with a photographic copy displayed at the club cabin used for meetings for over 75 years.
After years of arduous service the Army of North Virginia capitulates to overwhelming numbers. Officers and men may return home and stay until exchanged. The general expresses gratitude for steadfast devotion and prays for God’s blessing and protection.
Nearly 2,000 children from Aiken County attended the annual school day events at Eustis Park featuring athletic, spelling, reading and declamation contests. Graniteville and Gloverville led floats with prizes of 50 and 30 dollars respectively, while Pineland Shiloh Downer Montmorenci and others won city and country awards.
Samuel A Worley a white farmer in Warrenville section of Horsecreek Valley shot and killed his son Gerald Worley after a Friday dispute over a mule whipping. The elder says the son advanced with an axe and he fired four times in self defense. coroner found the axe in the boy’s hand. Worley surrendered and is held in Aiken jail.
The speaker argues Aiken must develop a year round industry beyond the winter resort identity. Locals should unite to plan, organize, fund, and establish a homegrown industry to sustain the community during the off season and diversify beyond cotton mills.
Subscribers to the Dibble Memorial Library fund met in the Bank of Western Carolina directors room to petition the city to donate the park site for library use. They decided to petition for the park instead of the city hall building, hoping the council will favor the request and enable a modern library on Pask avenue fronting the present city hall. The Chamber of Commerce will circulate the petition to council for action.
Sibert and Robinson of Augusta win the bid to erect a large three story residence replacing Mon Repos destroyed by fire. The Colonial style home will have 32 rooms and ten baths with a sixteen foot side porch terrace and stucco finish. Architects Peabody Wilson and Brown of New York. General contract about 180000 with a roofing plumbing and heating package of 15000. Work to start soon and be ready for occupancy by November.
An illustrated sermon at 11:15 a m by Dr McLean on If a Man Die Shall he Live Again with special music. Sunday school at 9:45 am led by J T Shuler. Evening worship at 7:45 pm titled The Risen Christ and the Living Church illustrated with pictures. All are welcome.
Last Friday voters in North Augusta approved a bond measure to fund additional improvements to the local school building. The outcome was described as overwhelmingly in favor, signaling strong community support for modernization.
