City council discussed a proposed 250 000 bond to cover existing indebtedness and fund municipal improvements. Debt stands near 140 000 with 57 000 in wages due June first and only 18 000 cash on hand. Chamber of Commerce to circulate a petition to trigger an election. A survey for a surface drainage system was urged.
A meeting of the Aiken County Council of Farm Women will be held at Kitchings Mill school house on Saturday morning the 25th at 11 o'clock. Kitchings Mill ladies will provide lunch and it is hoped every Home Demonstration Club in the county attends. The creed stresses home life, child care, service, neighborliness, and community improvement.
Federal and Prohibition officers seized a ten gallon copper still in the Bland home at Belvedere and charged J R Bland. Perry and Co store at Belvedere raided with liquor seized. store proprietor bonded for court. Mary Jordan and Fletcher Lott arrested for selling whiskey. Five gallons found at J C Gunter’s Wagener home. he bonded for appearance.
Mrs. W. L. Lawton chairing the National Committee urged restricting outdoor display ads to commercial districts to protect scenery and residential values. About forty organizations nationwide cooperate, with many large national advertisers supporting the measure. The talk was at the Aiken Club with courtesy to secretary Mrs. C. Oliver Ise lin.
Fourteen companies bid on Wagoner Langley Windsor and North Augusta school bonds Saturday. Citizens & Southern Augusta bought Windsor for 35000 and North Augusta for 15000 at 1 percent. Peoples Security Charleston and White Phillips Davenport bid Langley 30000 and Wagener 25000 at 14 percent, premium 477.50 on Langley. Ce cil H Seigler says these are the lowest sale prices in the county.

The Knights of Pythias fifth district met in Allendale on Tuesday with Aiken delegates B F Etheredge F K Stauber T T Cushman Henry Busch C Lee Gowan and E E Woodward present. Woodward elected District Deputy and Cushman named clerk. Judge Henry Johnson welcomed the group. a barbecue dinner followed in the grove by the courthouse. The fall session will be at Estill Hampton County.
Superintendent Cecil H. Seigler said Dr. William F. Mealing notified him of a protest over the recent North Augusta school bond election. It is charged a qualified voter who produced tax receipts was not allowed to vote. The $15,000 bonds were approved by 51 to 21 to add six rooms to the school building.
In a crowded council chamber the 21 defendants, six white and fifteen Black, accused of selling and distributing moonshine face delayed proceedings. One defendant questioned the mayor amid ongoing appeals to habeas corpus and trial by jury. The mayor plans a future trial date, likely this summer.
Sunday school attendance surpassed two thirds of enrollment with fifteen visitors. The Woman's class presented a class gift to teacher Miss Catherine Gardner. Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Jay McGarity noted at morning service. Five members planned to unite with the church after evening worship. Choirs sang at both services and no church service next Sunday due to Presbyterian dedication.
Southern Baptists plan a large offering on Sunday April 19 to support Foreign Home and State Mission Boards. Envelopes have been distributed nationwide as churches prepare for a sacrificial gift before the books close April 30 and the May convention in Memphis Tennessee.
There will be no preaching at St. John's Methodist church Sunday. At 11 15 a m the Methodists attend the dedicatory service of the new Presbyterian church and the pastor will preach Sunday evening at the Williston Methodist church. Sunday school at 10 o clock and Epworth League at 7 as usual. Prayer meeting every Wednesday evening at 8.
United States District Court convened Monday with Judge Ernest F. Cochran presiding. All 19 cases on the docket were prohibition violations and fines ranged from 1 to 500 dollars. Eliza Gilchrist of Aiken, a colored woman, was fined 200 dollars.
Mrs. Mary Albergotti, longtime Home Demonstration Agent for the county, has resigned with her resignation taking effect July 1 and she has made other business arrangements.
Mr. and Mrs. George Foster of Hendersonville North Carolina are in Aiken visiting Mrs. Carne Burckhalter.
The eleventh grade at Graniteville High presented The Across the Hill Monday evening to raise funds for the school and drew a splendid audience and strong praise from attendees.
The home demonstration club of Kitch ings Mill held its April 8 meeting with a lamp shade making demonstration by Mrs Abbergotti after the business portion. A social hour followed with old-time songs and a contest won by Sara Courtney who received a lamp shade as a prize.
Mrs. Della Kitchings and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Edwards entertained a number of friends last Thursday with a fish supper at the home of Mrs. Kitchings. Guests included Mrs. Sara Courtney, Miss Lucile Courtney, Miss Erelyn Weeks, Miss Louise Etheredge, Thelma Clare, J. W Brodie, Marion Etheredge, Tlot Brodie and Harold Courtney.
Reverend J L Hancock of Blackstock South Carolina a former conductor on the Southern route from Augusta to Charleston will start a two week revival at Langley Baptist Church Sunday April 19 at 11 am Services run nightly at 8 pm Hancock highly recommended by leading Baptist ministers of the area A God Samaritan Mens Bible Class address will be given by Hancock at 10 am Sunday in the secret order hall all men invited to attend

Rev K D Smith received a Ford sedan from two local churches. Mrs J B Kitchings returned to Laurinburg NC. Thelma Clark joined Uncle Dr J S Clarke in Springfield. Lizzie Crouch visited Charleston. Mrs C Courtney of Brunswick GA visited Mrs Sara Courtney. Mrs B T Holman and F Faust attended Dr R A Gyles funeral in Blackville. Fritz left for Florida to visit a sick brother. Gladys Munch and Lewis Brodie attended State Teachers meeting in Columbia.
An engagement party in Darlington honors Miss Anna Sara Edwards and Rev. Phillip James McLean Jr. of Aiken. The couple will wed June 4 and plan missionary work in China after Seattle for the Northern Baptist Convention.
Amateur entrants may attend the Rose Hill event hosted at the residence of Mrs. Sheffield Phelps. The show features classes for floral arrangements and color categories with prizes for best yellow best red and best white. Exhibits must be delivered to Rose Hill by 4 p.m. the day of the show.
Mrs Sarah A Woodward 88 died at her Bath home shortly after a clock Tuesday afternoon. Services were at Bath Baptist Church yesterday at 10. Interment in Town Creek Cemetery. Survivors include husband Y P Woodward of Bath three sons D A Woodward of Greenville J P Woodward and Willm Woodward of Bath and daughter Mrs R J Sullivan of Goldville.
C M Cartney of Warrenville detained at Augusta police on Saturday morning charged with running down and injuring Stanford Beall of 1344 Tings Street. Beall suffered a broken ankle in the crash at the Filth and Cal hisun streets. men released on bond.
Relatives and friends gathered at the home of her son Mr Starnes to honor Mrs Emmaline Starnes on her 77th birthday. About 65 attendees enjoyed a bountiful dinner. Among the guests were Betavia Gunter Patrick Williams and the Fulmers Cook and Jackson households.
The third annual meeting of the Fifth District of the Upper South Carolina Woman's Auxiliary to the National Council of the church will be held at St. Paul's Church Graniteville on April 22.
Congaree Presbytery met in Aiken at the new Presbyterian church with Rev F Ray Riddle elected moderator. Four candidates for licensure were listed as Walter Swetnam George Swetnam James McGhee and Lucius Polk.
A Monday shipment of peanuts from Monetta in Asken County involved four shippers J C Sawyer T A Hallman W S Sawyer and J O Bauknight. They moved 12½ tons with 10 per ton cenadoes and a large cash value, while mills and the county agent discussed marketing to enable direct sales from the shipping point.
The Aiken library will shift to a two day weekly schedule ending the current week. Under the management of Librarian Mrs. Leon S. Holley the children's hour has been popular, with storytelling beloved by local boys and girls. The library will now open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 30 to 12 99.
Representatives from Second Congressional District schools converge at the Aitken Institute auditorium for a statewide oratorical contest. Superintendent Way McGarity oversees the event with admission limited to high school pupils.
Mrs Laura Ellen Chambers aged 70 died suddenly Tuesday night in Warrenville. The body was sent to Mooresboro North Carolina for interment. Funeral services will be held at the graveside. Survivors include daughter Mrs John Dedgen of Warrenville and sons Dr G W Chambers of Anderson and H Chambers of New York City.
Rev Dr Dugald McIntyre of Bethel Presbytery visited Rev John F E Henderson of Aiken after years apart. Both are Manitoba College alumni. The meeting occurred during the recently closed gathering.
James Nerenes Andrew Sindhos and Charlie Alvanos prominent members of Aiken Greco American colony were granted papers of citizenship by Judge Ernest Cochran at the federal district court on Wednesday.
