Fiberglas Brings Back 40 Workers at Aiken Plant

Owens-Corning Fiberglas in Aiken recalls 40 of its 305 laid off workers as a yarn furnace restarts. The plant had its third layoff since November with 125 furloughed in January and 100 laid off December 16 and 80 on November 13. The Aiken site makes Fiberglas and a glass mat for asphalt shingles, with peak employment around 1,700.

Augusta Mayors Cool to Regional Bus Plan Expansion

Augusta Mayor Ed McIntyre proposed a regional transit authority to extend the Augusta Public Transit System into Aiken and Richmond counties and Columbia, with shared funding. Aiken Mayor Odell Weeks and North Augusta Mayor D Kim Ledford voiced disinterest. County officials warned of potential loss of shopping dollars and scheduled a public hearing for April 20 at 7 p.m. in the County Council chambers. Columbia and Richmond counties showed varied interest but no commitments.

Peach growers await crop damage assessment after freeze

In Aiken and Edgefield Counties a past weekend freeze may have damaged the peach crop. W M DuBose of Monetta reports some damage in certain varieties. Edgefield farmer Lewis Holmes says about 20 percent of his crop, on a 1000 acre farm, was damaged. he estimates around 250000 dollars in gross income lost. Dr Richard Jesse of the South Carolina Department of Agriculture says most farmers are still in the fields evaluating damage. results likely won t be known for a week or ten days.
