February film series at Aiken library and local sports and politics notes
The Aiken County Public Library will show Sundays at 2 p.m. films in February including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Gold Rush, Some Like It Hot, and Casablanca with free admission. Raymond Chavous, Jackson High School standout, signed a grant-in-aid with Clemson University after leading Silver Bluff to a 10-2 season and 5-AA title. W J Bryan Dorn, longtime congressman and current state party chair, hinted at not seeking re-election while weighing governor or U.S. Senate bids after a car crash recovery. A public forum on pari mutuel betting in Aiken County is set for February 6 at 7 p.m. in Clearwater with Midland Valley merchants association and the Aiken County Delegation in attendance. For details call Lynn Kirkland. The note ends with a trivia remark about the term piping hot.

FIrms Proposals Compete For New Health Facility Beds
The decision rests with J Richard Coney deputy commissioner of state health planning as the East Central Georgia Health Systems Agency compares Serenity Health Care and Health Industries of America proposals. Serenity would add 17 psychiatric beds and 14 state hospital avoidance beds along with nine detox beds and 16 substance abuse treatment beds. The rival plan offers the same drug and alcohol beds but no psychiatric beds and emphasizes post discharge follow up. Serenity projects 3 to 3.5 million annual economic impact and phased hires totaling 90 staff by year three, starting with 55. The initial team includes a doctor, a psychiatrist, nurses, therapists and counselors. Both plans promise immediate community benefits.
