Railroads Extend Strike Deadline Five Days
Negotiators for the railroad industry and four AFL-CIO unions continued wage talks after unions postponed the nationwide strike deadline for five days at a government request. Assistant Secretary W. Willard Usery urged hard bargaining to avert government intervention, saying the delay benefits unions, workers, railroads, and the nation as a whole. The new deadline moved from 12:01 a.m. today to 3:01 a.m. Monday.

Community Chest Drive Kicks Off With Picnic and Canvass
The Ada Community Chest announces the 1970 drive with a kickoff picnic Thursday at 5 30 p.m. hosted by Ralph F. Smith and co chairs Heard Broadrick and Frank Jaques at Little Blue Ranch north of Connerville. Thirty volunteer solicitors begin advance gifts while canvassing runs Thursday through September 23. Dr. Stanley Wagner, drive chairman, introduces seven agencies including the American Red Cross joining Camp Fire Girls Boy Scouts Salvation Army Ada Boys Club Ada Summer Playground Association and USO. The general drive starts September 30 with a kickoff banquet September 29 at 7 30 p.m. in East Central Student Union ballroom. The goal is 95000 to be allocated under the Chest supervision with completion targeted by October 15.

Surplus Food Donated To Needy Families Across Nation
Washington AP reports over 16 billion pounds of farm produced food donated to needy families schools and institutions in the nine months ending March 1970, up from a year earlier. About 11 million people benefited, with 6.9 million receiving food stamps and the rest aided by commodity distribution. Food donations valued near 380 million dollars, amid a shift toward food stamp programs in most counties. Several counties still lacked food program plans as of September 1.
