Washington AP reports Agriculture Department data show dairy farmers increasingly do chores themselves due to difficulty hiring qualified help. 1964 census found 49 percent of work by employers and families. 1966 study rose to 78 percent by operators. Operators averaged 66 hours weekly vs 5 hours for hired on the same farms. overall farm workers averaged 47 hours.
