Pontotoc County 4-H member Martha Herion receives a share of 9350 in state educational grants after 9 years in 4-H and 145 completed projects. The 18 year old daughter of Beatrice Herion also won a 200 scholarship in the 4-H Leadership program and chaired the Pontotoc County Electric Cooperative project.
Washington AP reports that the new farm act, awaiting President Johnson's signature, provides wheat growers with price support loans of 1.25 per bushel and domestic certificates on 45 percent of projected yield. Signups run with the feed grain program in January and acreage rules tie wheat to other crop allotments.
George Harris and Murray Wade introduce Custom Pecan Service offering a Shock Wave Shaker mounted on a backward running truck and a hydraulic nut harvester. The system shakes trees in 15 to 30 seconds without trunk damage, then the harvester clears fallen nuts. The equipment, first in Oklahoma, originated from California walnut work and is aimed at large orchards.
The County 4 H Council met at Ada City Hall on October 21. New officers were elected: Marilyn Blansett president Latta Club, Robert Scroggins vice president Byng Club, Shelby Morgan secretary Latta, Stephanie McCullar reporter Vaness Club, Janice Chilcoat song leader Vaness, and Mike Golden game leader Union Hill. A National 4 H week display report was given and safety electric automotive and health winnings discussed with health chosen for county wide project.
The State Highway Commission opened bids Friday for more than 800000 in county road work in Pontotoc. Low bids were Henryetta Construction Co. for the Big Sandy Creek bridge at 266110 and Sherwood Construction Co. for a 2307 mile highway segment at 541699. Local bond funds funded the projects under the 490000 county roads issue approved Oct 13 1964, with right of way costs shared by local government in urban areas.
Bond winner Carol Dearman of Roff and Robert Scrog gins of Byng represented Pontotoc County at the District Personality Contest in Wewoka on Saturday October 23. Both spoke on personality and took part in a discussion panel, winning first place in their classes and each receiving a $50 bond.
