Cy Hailey to retire as Pontotoc County agent
Longtime Pontotoc County agent Cyrus H. Hailey will retire November 16 after 25 years in the post. He’ll be replaced by John D. Netherton. Hailey, born in Texas, earned degrees from Texas A&M and OSU and led county programs from Hereford Heaven to 61 grade A dairies, cattle grading, and youth activities. He plans to develop land in Adenr County with his wife Estelle Jane.

Brain Bowl crowns Byng as first county contest winner
Byng students won the first countywide Brain Bowl held Monday night with teams from Byng Latta Stonewall Vanoss Roff and M Lish. The format matched two seniors per school with moderator Karl Tilley as questions were posed and lighted desks indicated chances to answer. Junior Membership Granted in Angus Association
David Wilson, 14, of St. Joseph Missouri receives a junior membership in the American Angus Association. Secretary Glen Bratcher notes junior members may register purebred Angus at regular rates and enjoy Association privileges until age 21 when they can convert to lifetime memberships. Dry weather aids harvest but rain needed in east
Mild dry weather favored harvesting and planting across the state with wheat nearly all seeded and 90 percent up in good condition. Winter oats and barley are mostly planted with about three-fourths up, sorghum two-thirds harvested, corn at cleanup stage, and cotton harvest about one third complete awaiting frost to defoliate. Cattle remain in good to excellent condition.
