County farmers hit by drought gain relief as government pays 7.50 per ton for hay and other roughage. FHA estimates 75 roughage applications and about 500 grain program applicants. deadline December 1 for roughage, October 1 for current grain period ending October 31. Used for foundation herds as emergency relief, not market stock.

School Bus Driver Carries Big Load Of Responsibilities

Bob Wilson has driven the Francis school bus for 13 years. He transports about 38 children twice daily over roughly 90 miles a day and has never had a serious incident. He values the job, handles occasional misconduct calmly, and has raised five of his own.

Fire at cotton gin minor damage in Stonewall

The Stonewall Fire Department responded to a Friday afternoon blaze at the cotton gin where a wooden flume routed burns to the burn pit. Little damage was reported and Wanda Sue Stacy reported the fire.

Sheep Goes To Town Leads Pedersen Boys In Chase

A ram belonging to the Pedersen boys disappeared from their rural Iowa home last Sunday. The boys searched farms and nearby areas, sightings led toward Ada sale barn area, and on Friday the sheep was located near the Ada sale barn having decided to go to town.

FHA Chapters Split Honors In County Fair Contests

County FFA chapters fielded 83 boys across four groups at the county fair Tuesday. The Rofs chapter swept tractor driving with first and second places. Vaness led in judging contests taking first in poultry and field crops and second in dairy cattle. Latta won livestock judging and Allen topped dairy judging.

Miss Southerland Named Vanoss FFA Sweetheart

Brenda Southerland was chosen as chapter sweetheart by the Vanoss FFA at the regular meeting. She will compete at the State Fair in Oklahoma City for district and state sweetheart titles. Sammy Houser was elected chapter treasurer, with other officers already taking duties.

Lights Installed in Francis Street Corners

Two new street lights were installed in Francis last week. One stands at the northeast corner of the school ground and the other on the north side of town near the railroad spur.

County Fair winds up with four day exhibit and tight finish

The Pontotoc County Free Fair closed its 1956 edition after four days of judging in the quarter horse department. Despite a dry year farmers and ranchers showcased excellent exhibits while 4 H club women and youth members presented skilled handicrafts. Attendance stayed strong with crowds at night and the administration building frequently crowded with visitors. The baseball tournament crowned Byng over Stonewall 1 to 0 in a final noted as a thrilling close.

Pickup found in Coal Creek near Jesse. stolen from Ada

A pickup truck stolen from the Firestone store in Ada last week was recovered Tuesday by deputies Er nest Miers and Crawford John ston after being found bogged in Coal Creek about a mile and a half south of Jesse. The sheriff reported no clues to the thief or why the vehicle was driven into the creek.

The Pontotoc County Textbook Committee for the 1956 57 term lists Norman C. Mitchell as county superintendent and chairman with Dee Burdine Center vice chair, Mrs John Barringer Homer, Harrison Cope Lula, Mrs Craig Dunn Pickett, Mrs Audry Treas Ahloso, Mrs Alpha Medlock Lawrence, H B Hart Graves Egypt, and E L Landreth Francis as members.

Donkey Ball Event by Vanessa FFA Chapter

The Vaness FFA chapter will sponsor a donkey softball game on October 5 with admission charged. Ralph Dunham's trained donkeys from Crescent Oklahoma will perform during the event scheduled to start at 12 30 p m.
