Twins Were Among First Pupils in 1899 Leader School
W L Knickmeyer recalls Leader School in Pontotoc County founded by Colberts and the early fights for Black education. John and JJ Colbert, eight, were among the first pupils on February 12 1895, with a 16 by 16 log building, W D Cox as teacher, and a slate based learning method. Whippings were common in the early days as the community stretched funds to educate their children.

Oakman Plans Homecoming With Lunch and Services
Oakman prepares for its annual homecoming Sunday October 21 at the community church. An allay event features a noon basket lunch, beef cooked by the women, coffee and Kool-Aid by the Ladies' Club, and a program chaired by J. M. Nance with Rev. Ira Woinmack as afternoon speaker. Rev. Marl Wilson opens with Sunday School, welcome address by Nance, group singing, special numbers, and guest recognition in the afternoon for former Oaks residents.

Barbee’s Cotton Crop Boost From Water Experiment

O T Maxey Farm Family Named First Farm Family of Month
The Ada Chamber of Commerce designated the O T Maxey family near Latta as the first Farm Family of the Month. The Maxeys operate a 72 head dairy herd with 47 cows in milk and partnership with son Charles. The award reflects agricultural achievement and community leadership, presented by H J Huddleston with county agents C H Hailey and Jack McAskill in attendance.
