Grady Miller Co in Allen reports a slow peanut harvest due to bright dry weather causing about a two week delay and blight affecting some fields. Dexter Clinning of Atwood harvested 55 bushels per acre, while another grower yielded 72 sacks from five acres.
A seven week Oklahoma 4-H Leadership Development course for local volunteer leaders starts October 15 in Ponotoc County. Enrollment is limited to 45 on a first come basis, with Em erson Black noting the training aims to better equip leaders to assist 4-H members. The program covers club work history, organizing clubs, planning meetings, and supporting member projects.
Democrats in Pontotoc County urged to join a fall drive before election day as Lt. Gov. George Nigh and House Speaker J. D. McCarty visited Ada for a morale boosting rally. The one day event started at John Keltner's home on Kings Road with speeches urging a vigorous showdown against Republicans.
Oklahoma soil conservation technicians gather in Ada for a two day range management workshop led by Neal Stidham. Oakman Sportsman's Club met October 1 in the Oakman School gymnasium for a soil conservation program. Kenneth Yoakum of the SCS in Pontotoc County spoke on conservation aims, aided by Drexel Sales and Mr. Boren. A calf drawing crowned Maurice Current, who then auctioned the calf to Cullen Hampton for herd use. The gathering included a fish supper, with food prepared by club members and their wives, drawing focus to promoting soil conservation.
Mrs W E Snyder reports Ada fire safety event during National Fire Prevention Week at McLish High School. Assistant Chief Herman Landrith with Walter Graper of Fittstown urged watchfulness with trash fires and showed a Chicago fire film. The program includes a car wash, fee 1, proceeds to county schools.
An Ada egg salesman and a Milburn woman were injured in a two car collision on SHS near Ada at 10:20 am. Willis Moran, 62, and Die Backus, 62, were treated. Moran in fair condition at Valley View Hospital for possible chest injuries. The accident involved J C Wooley, 68, of Chillicothe, Tex, who drove the southbound car. Moran apparently turned onto an access road, his car spun and rolled, eggs in the back were shattered. Buford Wooley, 75, uninjured, was front seat passenger in the other car. Mrs. Backus rode in the back seat. The trio were returning to Milburn from Broken Arrow. Moran’s address is 524 West Fourth, Ada.
Cotton picking outlook in Pontotac County dips as fall harvest draws students from Lula Grade School. Local farmers like Lillard hire Lula students for fields while dry weather slows cotton. Declining small farms reduce labor demand, reversing past practice of early releases for harvest.
