Charley Nails claims two yard birds near Ada are half turkey half chicken and call them “Tirkens” as he explains the odd poultry along Highway 12 east of Ada. The sight stirs disbelief and curiosity about his poultry yard display.
Blue Bell Inc.. a garment maker, plans an Ada plant with up to 500 jobs and satellite sites nearby. Labor availability, favorable freight and tax terms cited by company officials. Ada would house cutting, storing and packing while satellite plants handle stitching and finishing. Expansion not yet definite. area expected to gain from the new industry.
Preparations for Ada Carisurias annual Christmas pageant accelerate with December 4 date in Norris Stadium. Fund drive exceeded target and full rehearsals for actors and chair were completed. This year show will feature over 20 scenes depicting the life of Christ with professional lighting and staging enhancing the tableaux style of prior editions.
Hottest young livestock man in the county, Gary Wright of Pickett, earned a $50 savings bond and a livestock scholarship award for his 4-H record. He maintains three livestock projects, including a dairy herd, a farm to market beef operation with two Hereford cows, and a registered beef herd. His calves and cows earned multiple class wins and profits, with notable results at the Pontotoc County Fair and the 1995 county fair. He has completed 15 4-H projects over four years, mostly in livestock.
STILLWATER Oklahoma peach and stone fruit trees face winter stresses after two hard years. Extension entomologist Eddie Whitehead notes the peach tree borer is hard to spot but leaves a gummy ball at the ground line. Control with chemicals like paradichlorobenzene PDB is common. clear away trash from the tree base and level soil. Two rings of PDB crystals placed near the trunk then covered with soil are recommended. Full treatment details available at county agents office. Peril, a pie supper at Bebee School Monday night with proceeds to support a community Christmas tree set banquet planned.
Pontotoc County delegates Bette Davis and Michael Lucas head to the state 4-H Congress in Oklahoma City November 22 to 24. Davis, 7 years in 4-H with 43 completed projects, will host Friday breakfast and has won awards in canning frozen foods and dress design. Lucas, in 4-H six years with 104 projects, has twice won the Asa Hutchinson award and earned an expense paid trip to Kansas City for the American Royal 4-H conference.
Fourth to eighth grade pupils sold tickets during a fundraiser at the Ahloso school. Mrs. Lance won the turkey, with proceeds to aid purchases for the new school building.
