In Somerville New Jersey November 10 the S-17 card reappears in the Hall Mills murder trial linking Willie Stevens to the crime. Prosecution and defense clash over fingerprints and the card’s provenance as detective Totten testifies and scene details are debated.
Albert B. Fall and Edward L. Doheny pleaded not guilty in the District of Columbia supreme court to conspiring to defraud the government over the Elk Hills naval oil lease. Fall appeared before Associate Justice Hoehling in Washington. The session drew more than 50 lawyers, with Atlee Pomerene among government counsel observers.
Local observer E A MacMillan recorded October with 6.94 inches of rain and 16 clear days 7 partly cloudy days. Maximum temperatures reached 87 and 38 with six rainy days and 2.7 inches in 24 hours on the 9th. Year to date rainfall stood at 40.96 inches, among the wettest years on record. A London vermin firm killed 60 million rats, up 20 million from a pre war year. A National Air Transport flight from Chicago to Dallas marked the first trial passenger service today at 9:55 a m.
The Oklahoma Portland Cement company set a local production record by shipping 13 254 barrels of cement to Oklahoma Texas Arkansas and Louisiana. The shipments totaled 53 016 sacks or over five million pounds packed in 65 cars. If sacks were laid end to end they would stretch from Ada to Allen.
The U S Department of Agriculture forecast a total cotton yield of 17 918 000 bales, up 464 000 from two weeks earlier, with Oklahoma at 1 789 000 bales. Census figures pre November 1 show 11 259 038 bales ginned. uncertainty remains about unpicked cotton and leaving lower grades in fields.
New Orleans reports the crop forecast near 17 000 bales, lower than expected, with total to November 1 at 11.26 million bales. Market response tiny with minor moves of seven to thirteen points in near months and little change in distant positions. Early trades after the report slip slightly from pre bureau figures yet stay five to ten points above Saturday close.
New York traders saw cot ton prices hold firm after the government raised its crop estimate to about 18 million bales. Before the report prices were higher by roughly a dollar a bale, but Southern selling trimmed gains while large buying from the trade offset the decline. Noon quotes showed December at 12.27 and March at 12.62, up five to eight points.
A cow on the Oklahoma City Ada-Atoka line caused a wreck when a motor car failed to stop. Eight railroad workers were cast about the right of way. three men, John Roy Elmer Cox and Billy Gregg, were critically injured at the hospital. Other crew members escaped with minor injuries.
The Oklahoma Cotton Growers Association opens its facilities to all Oklahoma cotton owners for storage and sale under a holding pool. Non member shippers sign a marketing contract valid for this season to borrow funds from the Intermediate Credit Bank at 4.5 percent. Facilities include a Houston warehouse with low insurance and storage rates, with a board advisory committee for input.
POPLAR BLUFF Missouri November 9 Two men arrested near Bernie last night and brought here today face charges of stealing an automobile. Officers found 24 sticks of dynamite fuse and caps and five ounces of nitroglycerine in the stolen car. Names given as Walter Simms and John Green. Green later said Hannibal as home. Fingerprint efforts by Dr. T D McKowen to verify identities.
George C Shepherd formerly president of Farmers State Bank of Afton was jailed in Ottawa County after being extradited from Reno where he was arrested last week on allegations of embezzling funds from the bank.
Mayor Somer Jones and Thomas P Holt met in Oklahoma City with the highway secretary to urge Pontotoc county road work. Secretary Guthrey said surveys are under way and contracts for grading and drainage will be let at the next session, with continued efforts to accelerate the project.
Oklahoma City report on statewide returns lists M A Nash leading the ticket for state superintendent with about 55 000 vote majority as three small counties Ellis Kiowa and Jefferson remain unofficially to report. Governor race totals show about 375 000 votes cast versus prior elections with various candidate tallies and margins still to be finalized.
On November 16 1926 the Fortnightly Study Club will host the Federation of Farm Women's Clubs of Pontotoc County. A luncheon will be served at the Presbyterian church basement with a program including guest introductions welcome address by Mrs Ed Granger responses by Mrs J H Bullock a parliamentary law lesson by Mrs John Davis and an invited address by Dr Bradford Knapp president of A and M College on town country cooperation.
Oklahoma City cattle prices hold steady with 1 200 head. Steers average 1060 pounds at 8.00, good beef cows 5.00 to 5.60, vealers 8.50 and up, stock cows 3.75 to 4.25. Hogs 500 head 10 to 15 cents lower, top 12.60, bulk 12.10 to 12.50, sows 10.50 to 11.60, packers 10.00 to 10.25.
Oklahoma bankers join with the Oklahoma Cotton Growers association to retire 400000 bales for eighteen months. A new cotton pooling fund will manage a two million dollar loan from Lew Wentz and bankers. The plan uses grower machinery and aims for immediate capital subscription and market restraint.
Oklahoma Cotton Growers Association and state bankers jointly control a cotton pool with 2000 bales placed in the hold. Treasurer Harry H. Leaming said receipts for pool deposits since Saturday will begin arriving at association headquarters by Wednesday.
W K Hale Osage county ranchman and John Ramsey farmer were to begin life terms for murdering Osage Indian Henry Roan. Federal Judge John H Cotteral extended the start by one week. they will enter Leavenworth prison on November 17 after Hale closes his business affairs in Oklahoma City.
A fire last night leveled the Golden Rod Mining and Smelting No. 27 mine ore mill nine miles northeast of Miami Oklahoma. Officials estimate damages at 100000 dollars, with some insured. Picher fire department failed to save the structure as investigators seek the blaze origin.
W. J. Biddle, warden of the United States penitentiary at Leavenworth, resigns. Attorney General Sargent asked him to stay until a successor is picked. no official confirmation of the resignation’s acceptance, effective November 15, as reported. Biddle had expected the development.
President Coolidge urged nonpartisan consideration of his tax refund plan. He said Congress should forget party lines and will consult with the house ways and means committee before advising how surplus should be returned to taxpayers. He cautioned against politics delaying relief.
Babson's statistical organization today named Enid Oklahoma as the best business city in the United States after surveying major statistics. The study forecasts Enid will see at least ten percent higher business in November compared with November 1925, labeling Enid the most fertile field in the country for the near term.
A Maryland tornado ripped through La Plata and Cedarville damaging farms and killing 15 with about 40 injured mostly school children. The Cedarville elementary suffered the worst blow as the school house collapsed with 61 in attendance. Immediate aid arrived from Washington as reporters described scattered wreckage and aid efforts.
In Mexico City on November 8 Tomas Zafiro and Leonido San Miguel ran a 624 mile course from Pachuca to Mexico City in nine hours and seven minutes. Observers noted they were fresh and not panting at the finish. They belong to the Tara humare tribe and the run was linked to the Central American athletic meet.
Jere J. Lillis aged 63, a retired banker and club man who drew national notice in 1910 after a bound and slashed assault by Jack P. Cudahy, son of Chicago packer Michael Cudahy, died in Kansas City on November 10.

In WeWoka Oklahoma the trial of R L A Steigleder formerly of Beggs and W C Lauer former president of Keifer National Bank for embezzlement tied to the Seminole State Bank failure was moved to the next Seminole county district court term. Steigleder's brother R E E Steigleder and R E Owen were sentenced to 25 years each in the penitentiary last month. Lauer remains jailed since last April unable to post bail.
Ada county cotton receipts climb past 8 000 for the season with 4 870 bales at the compress by Saturday 2 30 p m. Growers association adds about 150 bales plus 912 round bales. total around 5 476 bales. Over 900 bales arrived that week. Year ago receipts were 6 212 bales. County weigher saw 8 612 bales this season plus Growers association and round bales, roughly a third of county ginned.
