County Judge Fred Andrews criticized a Supreme Court ruling aligning juvenile court procedures with adult criminal court safeguards. The decision requires advance notice, counsel for minors, Miranda rights, and confrontation with witnesses, while preserving juvenile dependency provisions.
Byng Junior and Senior High School held their annual awards assembly on Wednesday May 11. Gov. Dewey Bartlett signed two major livestock health bills into law in Oklahoma City. HB 529 updates meat and poultry inspection and lays groundwork for a future mandatory inspection program, while HB 720, the Livestock Importation Act, requires health certificates for shipments, bans diseased livestock, allows inspections and quarantines, and makes violations felonies. Both laws take effect immediately with emergency clauses.
Ada Chamber of Commerce announced a weekend meeting with House Majority Leader Carl Albert and Rep Tom Steed set for Saturday June 17 at East Central State College. The event highlights Oklahoma redistricting with Stein and Albert likely to influence speakership and district realignments. Tickets are $2.50 per plate.
Eighth grade exercises at Pickett Center School were held May 16 in the gym. Master of ceremonies Mel Maxwell led the event. B L Pannell of McLish High School gave the invocation and benediction. Salutatorian Paul Penrod and valedictorian Stanley Kelly led the class. Carolyn Jacquess read the class history, Darrell Tarron the class will, Judy Barnes the class prophecy, and Jeff Walker presented the class scroll to Sandra Hallmark. Dr. E H Nelson was guest speaker. Snell Green issued awards and Norman Mitchell, county superintendent, presented diplomas.

City Manager J. B. Davidson announced the old dump would close Monday and dumping moves to a new site one-quarter mile north of the Mississippi bypass. Free dumping will be allowed seven days a week with rules to keep bulldozers able to cover material and no dumping on the driveway.
A county boy 5, Bryan Frank Holleman, was killed instantly at 10 a m when struck by a car three miles west of Ada on SH 13. The driver was Marian Jaree Evans, 29, Guthrie, returning her mother-in-law to Durant. seven people were in the car. Trooper John Smith investigated. Hollis Holleman, the boy’s father, a student, rushed to the scene. The death marked the 324th highway fatality this year.
