Steed Bill Would Extend Indian Land Restrictions

Congressman Tom Steed has introduced a measure to extend lifetime restrictions on lands allotted to Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes. The Oklahoma delegation, the administration, and the Inter-Tribal Council back the plan which would avert a 1956 expiry. The bill allows removal proceedings by individual Indians or the Interior Secretary and provides 90 day county court review for Interior rulings. It has been referred to the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee for early action.
