County agents report cattle spraying season across the county as ranchers battle external parasites. Hornflies ticks and lice are the main targets with the spray method noted by C H Hailey. Early counts show widespread adoption of dipping.
Hailey describes spraying cattle in corrals with rubber sprayers to manage horn flies. Use 0.5 percent DDT or toxaphene for beef cattle, with toxaphene offering longer protection and higher cost justification for range cattle. For dairy cattle use 0.15 percent methoxychlor. DDT or toxaphene must not be used on dairy cows due to milk contamination risk. A standard garden-type sprayer suffices.
Vanoss residents will soon ride on a paved stretch of Highway 61 from Vanoss to Gaar Corner. A work order was issued by Highway Director C A Stoldt and paving is set to begin May 26. The project covers 2.889 miles of rock base with double bituminous surfacing from Vanoss south to Highway 19 at Gaar Corner, costing $84,484 and awarded to Cohenour Construction.
The American-Korean Foundation funds a 4 H project in Korea to rebuild the agricultural sector. With 15 million farmers in a 22 million population, officials aim to energize Korean 4 H clubs. A $300000 shipload supports the effort.
The sheep shearing crew at work inside a dim hay shed powers clippers by gasoline motors. Workers shear, trim and discard wool as a sheep is revealed from a bundle of rags, then released back to the pen amid dust and noise.
Local farmers and ranchers will tour the 25th Red Plains Conservation Experiment Station Field Day in Guthrie on Tuesday May 24. The event opens at 9 30 a m with tours at 12 locations showing soil and water conservation research on grasses legumes cropping systems erosion control and pasture management. Ray Walker SCS state conservationist will give the main address on research needs after a free Clay Potts barbecue lunch.
County mobile unit offering free chest X-rays ends after Saturday May 21. Since April 4 the unit has toured Ponotoc County aiming to X-ray 60 percent of residents over 14, tallying 12,032 in Allen so far as organizers urge a final push to reach the goal before departure.
The WEEKLY notes two top seniors from Stonewall High School as correspondents for the ADA WEEKLY NEWS. Valedictorian Etta Fern Barbee writes the Ahloso news weekly, while salutatorian Mary Beth Scott covers Union Valley happenings. Barbee is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Barbee of Ahloso.
