George Harris Sprays Timber in Risky Summer Air Runs

George Harris, manager of the college book store, spends summers timber spraying in Oklahoma’s Atoka and Coal County areas. Using a Stearman bi-plane and a 245-T diesel mix, he covers about 15 acres in 13 minutes per run, facing frequent engine failure risk and dangerous field landings. The season runs roughly mid May to mid July, extending beyond comfort for many.

Cimarron Grape Promises For Oklahoma Planting

Oklahoma State University announces a new grape variety named Cimarron selected by Professor Herman Hinrichs from about 80 000 seedlings bred across fourteen years. expected for home or commercial planting by fall 1960 or spring 1961. Cimarron features even ripening, disease resistance to black rot and anthracnose, hardiness, and easy propagation. Planting stock will be available through Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks Inc. later in 1958 or early 1959.

Farmers May Apply For New Wheat Allotments

Pontotoc ASC announces 1939 wheat acreage allotments for farms that had no wheat seedings 1956 57 or 38 and no 1958 allotment. Owners must apply in writing by July 1 1958 to their ASC county committee. If not filed no 1959 or 1958 history allotments will be established. Blank forms available at the ASC county office.

Next Big Pony Sale Set by Hutchinson

More than 500 ponies will go on sale next Monday at the Ada area Shetland pony palace. Asa Hutchinson, originator of the Ada barn, notes 206 ponies already consigned including some Topper Tine. The Ada barn adds ten air conditioning units in the pavilion making it a unique pony venue. Col William Porter of Alexis, Illinois, leads five auctioneers for the sale starting at 10 a m lasting four days. The Ada barn sits on State Highway 13, northwest of Ada, with a main barn and a 150 by 100 feet building plus other facilities.

Meat Still Tops in U S Consumer Budget Says Survey

W L Knickmeyer reports new Agricultural Marketing Service findings from a 1955 survey of about 6000 households across urban rural areas. Meat accounts for about 25 percent of the food budget with beef leading at 41 percent, pork 38 percent, and lunch meats 12 percent. Farmers eat more meat than others, aided by home production and increased refrigeration.
