The Oklahoma Cattleman's Association plans a two day Ada area convention starting with a noon barbecue at Tri Rhynes ranch near Stonewall on June 25. A tour of local ranches includes Epper and Echo Ranch with horse races and multiple Ada business sponsors organizing Thursday program.
Traffic on US 77 at Purcell moved normally Monday after a temporary detour around the Walnut Creek bridge, which collapsed Saturday under a travel truck. Highway Dept. engineer Lawrence S. Hill said a low water crossing was opened to bypass the long Asher Stratford Pauls Valley route, with crews to improve the crossing. The department aims to keep it usable until the bridge is rebuilt.
An Eight-man Soil Conservation Service team probes the Shi Ranch dam southwest of Stratford after five inch rainfall floods raise the lake from 20 to 46 acres. Investigators seek causes, considering creek bed, dry weather cracking, and unsuitable material, with core samples planned. Dam cost 45000 and remains under repair pending findings.
Ada Livestock Auction president Sherwood O Neal says too many cattle are the root of the downturn. He notes a heavy cattle population and long feeding times drove prices down roughly seven to nine dollars per hundredweight from a year ago. Rancher A D Son Cody warns July and August will hit hardest as he and others brace for market shifts and potential losses.
