The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that cities facing integration orders may close public facilities such as swimming pools, denying access to both blacks and whites. The decision, led by Justice Black and aligned with Nixon appointees, held there is no illegal discrimination when neither race has access to public facilities. Dissenters were Douglas Brennan White and Marshall.

Chimpanzee grammar study tainted by college satire
Dr Max Rafferty uses a UC chimpanzee named Sarah to parody college pedagogy. The piece argues that motivation drives learning, noting how candy rewards foster grammar understanding while schools tame challenge and competition through reforms, tests, and the push for “relevant” education.
Student demonstrates strong grammar and vocabulary gains
The article notes Sarah, a student, uses sentences correctly and shows a broad vocabulary of about 190 words, exceeding what many peers achieve at any age. Her grasp of grammar and ability to construct sentences stand out as notable skills.

Reapportionment Still May Be Required
ACLU official says single member districts can be required under the Voting Rights Act despite a Supreme Court ruling. Charles Morgan Jr. told a caucus of 30 black lawmakers from nine Southern states that records of racial exclusion justify single member districts, with no conflict between Indiana and Hinds County decisions. The briefing, led by Morgan and George Taylor, aimed to clarify legal questions after the Indiana multimember district ruling, as officials noted differing Southern state histories.
