Ballots for the June referendum on extending the wool and lamb promotion program have been mailed to all known Pontotoc County wool producers. Voters must be producers owning sheep 30 consecutive days during 1970 and ballots must be received by June 12.
The Madill Sand Bass Festival runs June 13 to 19 with a carnival pee wee rodeo terrapin races a free fish fry and outdoor church services plus hydroplane races fishing contests an amateur golf tournament BB gun contests a queen contest and an art exhibit. Milk cartons air dropped into Lake Texoma begin June 13 with daily prize winners and a final fish-off.
An Oklahoma Highway Department spokesman says two mud slides blocked Oklahoma 48 north of Atwood in Hughes County. Traffic is diverted east to the U S 75 bridge near Calvin. The slides originated from a road embankment running parallel to the South Canadian River.
U.S. farm exports in 1970 topped 7.2 billion dollars with grain cotton and oilseeds leading. Meat and livestock exports reached 574 million while imports of similar products neared 1.9 billion, yielding a 728 million trade deficit. Dairy milk prices rose slightly in May as retail costs held steady. Turkey and Ireland meat prospects noted with Ireland’s cattle at 5.4 million head and rising early-year imports.
Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardin said the Farmers Home Administration will ease loan repayment timing for drought stricken farmers and ranchers. Delays will not be delinquencies or affect future loan eligibility. Emergency aid expanded in Texas New Mexico and nearby states with funds for feed grain hay transport and conservation assistance.
Agriculture Department officials told House hearings that spraying for corn blight is not economical for field corn due to high costs of large scale applications. Some seed corn growers and a few Indiana attempts showed mixed results, while U S feed grain exports faced price effects but were not severely hurt. Mink ranching also declined, with 500 plus ranches exiting and pelts down 20 percent.
Ada rancher Walter Woolley Jr. was appointed by Gov. David Hall to the State Soil Conservation Board for a five year term. Woolley, a OSU graduate, heads the university alumni group and serves on the Foottoe County Soil Conservation District board. He is active in livestock and agricultural programs statewide.
In Escandon close to Juarez, 12 men and 1 woman were discovered buried on land owned by the mayor's brother, after a worker struck a head while digging foundations for a vacant movie house. The victims were shot in the eyes and buried within about 50 yards.
U S Soil Conservation Service faced a House subcommittee hearing on charges that watershed programs harm ecology by cleaning and straightening streams. SCS administrator Kenneth E Grant defended plans stressing land and water conservation, noting channel work is limited and often secondary to overall watershed protection.
Dr. Frank H. Baker of the University of Nebraska Animal Science will headline a regional Polled Hereford pattern for Progress Clinic on July 14 at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. Panels include mid-south cattlemen and breeders and a discussion of the superior Sire Program by the American Polled Hereford Association.
