Death Trial Is Resumed Today in McAlester

The second murder trial of convict James D. French resumed in McAlester. Seven witnesses testified after yesterday’s start. French, 26, was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1961 slaying of cellmate Eddie Lee Shelton, but the conviction was overturned earlier. He appeared unfettered, in a prison uniform without ID, took notes, and whispered to his attorney. He has repeatedly said he desires the death sentence.
