County 4 H Federation Honored At Courthouse Meeting

County 4 H members and leaders reviewed a successful year at the Ponto toc County 4 H Federation and Achievement meeting in the district courtroom. Wan da Young Fitzhugh and Mary Ann Griffith won the Key Awards. Frankye Sullivan received the first personality award. 32 county awards were given. upcoming events include a commercial cattle grading school March 1 and a Share the Fair festival March 25 with acts and prizes. Vernon Young presided as retiring president.

Fitzhugh Ag Student Joins Alpha Zeta Honor Society

Jerry Young, an agriculture senior from Fitzhugh, has been initiated into the Oklahoma A and M College chapter of Alpha Zeta. The honorary fraternity, with 48 campus chapters, selects scholars for leadership and character to promote agriculture. Young majors in entomology and is active in campus groups.

Nolen and Ozbirn Boys Have Many 4-H Irons In Fire

Harold and Richard Nolen and Bart Ozbirn drive busy 4-H sheep projects on adjoining Oklahoma farms. Richard and Bart attend Homer school with Harold at Byng High School. The trio keeps expanding their flocks from seven, eight, and nine months to as many as 38 sheep for the Nolens and 14 for Bart.

Tragedy Strikes In Sequence Near Steedman

A three day run of deadly crashes claims three at a train crossing east of Steedman and two more in Cushman Corner near Stratford. Eddie Johnson 59 his wife Edith 54 and granddaughter Lavern Sue Johnson died in the Friday collision. Preston Robert Cooper 62 of Vinson and milk truck driver Robert A Bob Eakens 27 of Kona were killed in Sunday’s two car smash with a milk truck.

Coal County Group Schedules Angus Hereford Sales

The Coal County Breeders Association will sponsor two sales at the Coalgate Community building on February 7 and 9. Association president I. O. Kile announced the event, with Hereford buyers on Monday and Angus on Wednesday. A total of 104 animals will be shown and offered for sale. At the Monday sale 28 Hereford cattle were listed.

Mid-Continent and Sunray Move Toward Merger

The boards of Mid-Continent Petroleum Corp. and Sunray Oil Corp. have agreed in principle to merge. Jacob France of Mid-Continent and C. H. Wright of Sunray announced the plan and said it will go to shareholders after formal merger documents are adopted.

Drive Against Accidents Organized in Pontotoc County

Pontotoc County locals met at the Jaycee hall to launch an anti accident campaign. Dr. Max Wilcomb, head of Oklahoma health department accident prevention, outlined that 42.3 percent of fatal crashes are motor vehicle related and home accidents form about a third of deaths. He noted 350 to 400 Oklahomans die yearly and many could be prevented. The drive will begin with a survey of local conditions.
