Flood Control Benefits Reach Downstream Boggy Landowners

Upstream watershed work in Pontotoc and Coal counties pays off now as 3,000 acres of timberland cleared in Atoka County and along Clear Boggy Creek. Landowners convert swampy bottom land to production with ponds, Bermuda grass pastures, and planned cultivation. Conservations note that much of Atoka’s best land remains timbered, with four sections forming the Clear Boggy watershed.

Large county fire chars 1000 acres near Allen

A welder's torch sparked a massive grass fire near Allen clocking roughly 900 to 1000 acres, burning fences and cattle lands across Pontotoc County. Cattle losses include two cows and several calves missing. a Lawrence house burned as part of a broader rash of Monday fires. Firefighters from multiple crews battled the flames until early Tuesday as livestock and property faced risk.

Pair Of Aircraft Makes Forced Landings In County During Week

A light plane and a helicopter ran out of gas in separate incidents in the county during the week. The light plane was extensively damaged when the pilot landed in an open field south of Oakman and rolled over. the pilot escaped injury. A National Guard helicopter also ran out of gas on night flight, landing in a pasture with no injuries or damage. A 24 year old Air Force lieutenant escaped injury in a crash three miles north of Homer. He, Ralph F. Zwerg, 24, Biloxi Miss, was en route to Norman from Biloxi to pick up his wife and three children visiting friends. Zwerg, a 1963 University of Oklahoma graduate, is a second lieutenant at Keesler AFB Miss. He described the final moments as he searched for a safe landing area amid timber and ditches before touching down near Homer. He rode the plane to rest with the nose gear sheared and the craft upside down after a ditch impact. He hung upside down by his lap belt and recalled the surreal experience. Nutrition Short Course At Latta Draws Cattlemen

Seventy cattle producers attended the first session of a three part Livestock Nutrition Short Course at Latta School in Pontotoc County. Bill Taggart spoke on seed characteristics including chemical analysis and palatability with feed cost and tag guarantees discussed. Dr Curtis Richardson described how animals use feed and nutrient absorption. The second session is set for Thursday 4 to 8 pm with a 5:30 pm dinner. Drs Robert Noble and Bob Totusek will discuss further topics.

Election Board Trims Pontotoc Precincts to 40

Pontotoc County drops 53 precincts to 40 with 13 areas eliminated including North Stonewall West Roff Gaar Corner Lightning Ridge Valley View East Latta Bebee Center Conway Oakman Lula Harden City and Ward 1 Precinct 4 Ada. Woodrow Gibson says it saves about 800 annually and takes effect at the next election on May first Tuesday. Voters need not re register as registrations will be transferred and new cards mailed.

Services Held for Otto Smith in Allen

Funeral rites were held Monday at the United Pentecostal Church in Allen for Otto Smith who died January 19 in Tulsa at age 60. Rev. John M. Griffin assisted by Clyde Nickell. Smith was born October 18, 1903 in Newton County Arkansas. He leaves one sister Mrs. Ethel Mercer Duncan and many nieces and nephews. Burial was in Allen Cemetery with Whisenhunt Funeral Home of Tulsa in charge.
