In California cattle rustling remains a major crime with up to ten years in jail as the state faces 1200 cases last year. Sheriff and federal agents describe rustlers as individuals and small outfits using trucks to steal cattle for quick sale or freezers.
A grass fire swept about a section south of Allen damaging winter feed and fencing and reducing next year's grass. Landowners Page Thompson and C C Ross reported acre losses around 350 acres, with cattle losses minimal but concerns about cover and regrowth. Soil experts warn two-year recovery and risk of overgrazing. burning helps brush but hurts long term pasture.
The emergency feed program in Pontotoc County reports 59 cars of grain totaling just over 6 million pounds. May 31 is the current cutoff, with potential changes if conditions merit. Trader Mills handles bulk distribution as facilities fill, while about 450 cattle breeders filed for grain and wait 10 days to two weeks for delivery after applying.
The Vanoss 4-H Clubs join a county safety contest. Safety posters will be placed in store windows and at the school. A safety display is prepared for Harp And Ashland Department store windows. Safety checks are being made for individual cars. A fire drill and a tornado drill will take place at the school.
County officials begin a two stage effort to eradicate brucellosis with petitions to 60 percent of cattle owners representing 1 167 herds and 70 percent of 46 690 cattle. The plan seeks modified certified status with indemnity for reactors and a three year testing drive led by County Agent Cy Hailey and Dr Don Williams.
An explosion heavily damaged a North Broadway building at 1317 N Broadway in Ada injuring Lonnie Current 18 and leaving him at Valley View Hospital with first to third degree burns. Two other men in the building at the time Johnny Byers and Earl Ramsay escaped uninjured while Larry Ramsay is noted as a fourth man.
The Ada district court session began with Judge John Boyce McKeel presiding. Billy Jack Stowe, 23, was found guilty of robbery by force and fear, his sentence left to the judge. George Frank Fennell was convicted of first degree burglary after a hung jury in the first trial, with a seven year minimum sentence. J D Ferris of Norman was convicted of bogus check writing for 2 860.85 to L O Warren with overdrawn funds. An explosion near the courthouse caused injuries and property damage, with bystanders noting a sonic boom impression and windows shattered.
Ada gains a new 10000 windfall for its airport program with a 5000 state grant from the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission. Earlier the city secured a 45000 FAA grant, with federal matching. City Manager J B Davidson expects bids to be advertised in March as the extra funds enable the amplified project.
County cattlemen show strong interest in the livestock nutrition short course at Latta School. Sixty five attended the second session with Dr. Robert Noble and Dr. Bob Totusek presenting on proteins minerals and vitamins for livestock. The third session January 30 features Dr. L S Pope of Oklahoma State University discussing balancing rations mechanics and new feeding developments. The Ada Farm and Ranch Club Oklahoma extension service and county agent's office sponsor. Officers elected Norris Price president four directors Dorsey Myers Sherwood O Neal Bill Ballard and Dr Don E Williams carry over directors Billy H Thompson W M Whitmire W C Wigley Jess Collins for 1964. Dr Ralph Jenner federal veterinarian spoke on the Oklahoma brucellosis Bangs program stressing methods toward modified certification and eventual eradication.
